Climate of Albania

Country climate guide

Albania stands in the south-western corner of Europe, where the Adriatic and Ionian Seas meet the Balkan highlands. Its climate is essentially Mediterranean, but mountain ranges crossing the interior bring continental and alpine influences inland, so the country moves from coastal warmth to highland coolness within a few dozen kilometres.

Main climate zones

The coastal lowland, from Durrës and Vlorë south towards the Greek border, has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate: dry, hot summers and mild, wet winters. The central and eastern plateaus, including the Korçë basin, follow a more continental regime with colder winters and warmer summers. Above roughly 1,000 metres the climate turns alpine, with long snow cover and short, cool summers.

Temperatures

Along the coast, January means are about 6 °C to 9 °C and July means about 24 °C to 26 °C. Tirana, slightly inland, averages about 7 °C in January and 24 °C to 25 °C in July. Highland stations are considerably cooler, and winter below-freezing minima are normal above about 1,200 metres.

Rainfall

The western lowlands take roughly 1,000 mm to 1,400 mm a year, with most rain falling between November and March, and the eastern mountains can exceed 1,500 mm. Summer is the driest season nearly everywhere.

When to go

Late May to early June and mid-September to October bring mild days with less rain, while January and February are wettest and bring snow to the interior.
