Climate of Cape verde Islands

Country climate guide

The Cape Verde Islands have a dry tropical climate shaped by their Atlantic location, volcanic terrain and the north-easterly trade winds. Temperatures stay warm all year, with only modest seasonal variation near the coast, and the islands have a long dry season plus a short, irregular rainy season, usually concentrated between August and October. Rainfall differs sharply from island to island, and from coast to mountain: windward slopes catch much more moisture, while leeward valleys and low coastal ground stay arid or semi-arid. The trade winds bring fresh breezes, especially from late autumn through spring, and Saharan dust sometimes reduces visibility.

Dry and rainy seasons

The dry season runs from November to June and is the period when most travel happens. The rainy season, from July to October, brings the islands' only substantial rain, heaviest in August and September; showers and storms can arrive suddenly and occasionally disturb plans.

Island and altitude differences

Rainfall and green cover fall away with distance from the mountains. Praia in the south of Santiago and the low districts around Furna are close to desert conditions, while the upper western slopes of Santo Antão, São Nicolau and Brava, and the forested crater of Fogo, catch far more cloud and rain.

Temperatures

The Atlantic keeps island temperatures very stable. Praia averages about 25 °C, with the warmest months near 27 °C and the coolest near 23 °C; Mindelo sits slightly lower, around 24 °C to 25 °C. Nights are rarely cold, but higher volcanic interiors can drop several degrees after dark.
