Climate of Japan
Country climate guideJapan is an island arc of four main islands and thousands of smaller ones, stretching from about 24°N in the Ryukyu Islands to 45°N in Hokkaido, and it sits where major ocean currents and air masses meet. The mountains are young and steep, so they force rain onto the coastal air, and the surrounding sea carries the warm Kuroshio north along the Pacific side and the cold Oyashio south along the Sea of Japan. The result is a humid, seasonal climate: a wet, typhoon-prone summer and a cold, snowy winter in the north.
Main climate types
The country runs through several classifications at once. Okinawa and the Ryukyus are subtropical, with warm winters and frequent typhoons. Central Honshu, around Tokyo and Nagoya, is humid subtropical with a long hot summer and a mild winter. Northern Honshu and Hokkaido are humid continental, with real winters and snow. The mountains of the Kii peninsula in central Honshu are the wettest of all, taking over 2,500 mm a year, and some stations reach the rank of tropical rainforest climate.
Temperatures
Tokyo averages about 6 °C in January and about 26 °C in July. Naha in Okinawa averages about 17 °C in January and about 28 °C in July. In the north, Sapporo averages about minus 4 °C in January and about 21 °C in August, and the interior of Hokkaido is colder in winter.
Rainfall
Annual totals are substantial. Tokyo receives about 1,500 mm to 1,600 mm, mostly in the early summer rains of June and July and again in the typhoon and autumn months. Sapporo takes around 1,100 mm to 1,400 mm, with about a third falling as snow. Okinawa takes about 2,000 mm in the summer and autumn storms. The Kii peninsula can exceed 3,000 mm, and the Sea of Japan coast around Niigata and Toyama is among the snowiest regions in the world.
When to go
Spring, from late March to early May, brings mild weather and the cherry blossom season, and autumn, from late October to November, is clear and colourful. Summer is hot and humid, and the typhoon season runs from July to October, usually worst in August and September. Winter is best for snow sports in Hokkaido and northern Honshu.
