Climate of Kuwait
Country climate guideKuwait is a flat expanse of desert at the northern end of the Persian Gulf, with no relief whatever to break the heat. The capital sits on the coast, but the country quickly gives way to sand and salt flats inland. Its climate is among the most extreme of the desert world: very hot, very dry summers and short, mild winters.
Main climate types
Köppen classifies the country entirely under the desert climate heading, with a hot desert regime over most of the land and a marginally wetter winter along the coast. The defining features of the year are two: the summer heat, which builds from May and peaks in July and August, and the winter, which is cool, clear and short. Dust storms from the north-west are the main hazard.
Temperatures
Kuwait City averages about 14 °C in January and about 33 °C in July. Summer begins in May and lasts until October, and daytime temperatures in July and August often pass 45 °C, particularly inland, where dry sand absorbs the sun. Humidity along the coast rises in late summer because of the shallow, warm Gulf water, so coastal evenings are sultry even though the air is dry. Winter nights, especially inland, can drop near 5 °C.
Rainfall
Rain is minimal and erratic. Kuwait City receives roughly 25 mm a year on average, though totals vary wildly from year to year, with most falling between November and March as brief showers. Snow has never fallen. Humidity, not rain, is the more notable feature of the winter coast, when mist and low cloud form. Dust storms, raised by strong north-westerly winds, occasionally obscure the sun for a day or more, especially in spring.
When to go
The cool months, from mid-November to late March, are the only comfortable time to visit. Temperatures in the afternoon sit in the low 20s °C, evenings are mild, and the desert fringe is accessible. Spring, in March and April, brings wildflowers to the sand after the winter rains and is the best season for the interior. Avoid July and August unless travel is unavoidable; the heat is severe and outdoor sightseeing difficult. January is the coolest month.
