Kazakhstan winter outlook points to warmer averages
October 20
October 19 — Kazakhstan expects a warmer-than-normal winter, Kazinform reported on October 18, citing the national hydrometeorological service.
December temperatures are forecast to average 2°C above normal nationwide. Most regions could be 1–2°C warmer in January and 1–3°C warmer in February. Northwestern areas in January, and northern and eastern areas in February, are expected to remain near normal.
Winter precipitation could exceed normal levels in the northwest, north, northeast and parts of central Kazakhstan. Above-normal precipitation is forecast across most of the country in February.
Large temperature swings may bring blizzards, gusty winds, icing and fog. Alternating warm and cold spells could leave an ice crust on snow cover.
Rain, snow or sleet is expected across much of the country in November, with frequent temperature fluctuations later in the month. Night-time temperatures could reach −18°C on some days in northern, eastern and central areas.
The agency’s September assessment described a long-term warming trend over the past 50 years. It identified 2025 as Kazakhstan’s warmest year since observations began in 1941.
