Climate of Uganda
Country climate guideUganda sits astride the equator in east Africa, with Lake Victoria on its south-east side and the Rwenzori mountains and the great rift escarpments running through it. Being equatorial and only partly broken up by highland, the country is warm all year, and its real distinction is the way rainfall arrives in two wet seasons rather than one.
Main climate types
Nearly all of Uganda is classed as tropical savanna under the conventional grouping, with the lake swamps and the forest belt being wetter still. The highlands, including the Rwenzoris, the Elgon massif in the east and the hills of the south-west around Kabale, are cooler and wetter, and the Rwenzori range holds snow on its highest peaks. The lake basin has the country's highest sunshine totals.
Temperatures
The capital has January means about 26 degrees Celsius and July about 26 as well, so the annual range is small. In practice the warmest months are February and March and the coolest are around June and July, which fall midway through the two wet seasons. High ground makes a real difference: Kabale, at 1,800 metres, averages about 17 in July and about 16 in January.
Rainfall
Annual rainfall is around 1,500 millimetres at Kampala, falling in two wet seasons with a short dry gap in January and February and a longer one in June and July. The south, around Lake Victoria, is the wettest and is regularly affected by heavy downpours and flooding, while the north is the driest part of the country.
When to go
The dry seasons are the best time for most travel: December to February and June to July. The wet seasons, from March to May and from late August to November, bring heavy rain, muddy roads and difficult conditions for the mountain gorilla trekking that the south-west is known for.
